Frequently Asked Questions

What are French-style green beans, and where can I find them? French-style green beans are typically slender and longer than standard green beans. You can find them in the frozen vegetable section of most grocery stores. If unavailable, you can use regular green beans, but make sure to blanch them before proceeding.

Can I use canned green beans instead of frozen or fresh? While fresh or frozen green beans are recommended for the best flavor and texture, you can use canned green beans in a pinch. Just be sure to drain and rinse them before cooking.

How can I prevent the slivered almonds from burning when toasting them? To toast slivered almonds without burning them, use a buttered skillet over medium-low heat and keep them moving by stirring or shaking the pan. They can go from golden to burnt quickly, so watch them closely.

Is it necessary to add lemon juice, or can I skip it? Lemon juice adds a refreshing and bright element to the dish. However, if you prefer not to use it, you can skip it or substitute with white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar for a similar tangy note.

How do I keep the green beans warm before serving? You can keep the cooked green beans warm by placing them in a covered dish or wrapping them in foil until you’re ready to serve.

Can I make this dish in advance and reheat it? Green Beans Almondine is best when served fresh, but you can make it ahead and reheat it gently on the stove or in the oven. Keep the bacon and almonds separate until serving to maintain their crispiness.

Substitutions and Variations

Nut Options: If you’re allergic to almonds, you can use other nuts like sliced or chopped toasted hazelnuts, pecans, or cashews for a unique twist.

Garlic and Shallots: Sauté minced garlic and shallots with the green beans for a savory kick.

Parmesan Cheese: Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the dish just before serving for a cheesy touch.

Lemon Pepper Seasoning: Use lemon pepper seasoning instead of fresh lemon juice for added convenience.

Balsamic Reduction: Drizzle balsamic reduction over the dish for a rich, sweet-tangy flavor.

Can you please tell me what the sodium content for this recipe would be? I have to be careful of sodium content. Thx

    1. Hi Lanne,
Thank you for asking. Here are my estimates, depending on how many servings you divide it into: 6 servings: ~349–619 mg per serving; 8 servings: ~262–464 mg per serving. You can leave out the salt or reduce/leave out the bacon, and use unsalted butter to help lower the sodium content. I hope this helps!
