What is your favorite breakfast food? Mine is Classic French Toast, for sure. The other night, we were having breakfast for dinner (which the kids love), and my daughter suggested French Toast instead of pancakes this time.

She didn’t have to ask me twice. I immediately looked in my grandma’s cookbook for the recipe. It is slightly different than what my mom used to make, so I adapted it to make it my own.

The French Toast recipe from my grandma did not have any cinnamon, so I made sure to add some. It didn’t call for vanilla either, and I wish I had added some. Maybe next time.

Ingredients You Will Need

  • Milk – Helps thin out the eggs and creates that soft, custardy soak that makes French toast soft instead of hard and dry.
  • Eggs – An important ingredient in French; they coat the bread and cook into that lightly fluffy, golden exterior.
  • Salt – Just a pinch to balance the sweetness and bring out the other flavors.
  • Bread – The base of it all, soaking up the custard and turning crisp on the outside and soft in the middle.
  • Cinnamon – Adds warmth and that classic French toast.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best bread to use for French toast? Slightly stale bread works best because it soaks up the custard without falling apart. Thick-cut white bread, brioche, or challah are all great options.

Can I make French toast with fresh bread? Yes! Just dip it quickly so it doesn’t get soggy, or let the slices sit out for a bit to dry before cooking.

Why is my French toast soggy in the middle? It usually means the bread was soaked too long or the heat was too low. A quick dip and a properly heated griddle make a big difference.

How do I know when it’s done? The outside should be golden brown, and the center should feel set, not wet, when you press lightly with a spatula.

Helpful Tips

  • Use actual French bread and let it sit out for a day or two so it’s a little dry.
  • When dipping the bread in the egg mix, it is easiest to use tongs.
  • I also like to use a large bowl with a wide bottom so the bread can fully soak.
  • To cook the toast, I like to use a griddle pan on the stove.

This classic French toast is the kind of breakfast that makes the morning feel instantly better. Soft slices of bread soak up a simple cinnamon-kissed custard, then turn golden and cozy on the griddle. It’s easy, familiar, and always the first thing gone from the plate.
