This Ground Beef and Tater Tot Casserole is one of those dinners I make when I need something easy that I know everyone will actually eat. It comes out of the oven hot and bubbly with crispy tots on top and that creamy, cheesy beef layer underneath. My kids love it, and yours will too.

Ingredients You Will Need

- Tater Tots are the main ingredient and add delicious potato flavor as well as a nice crunch.
- Ground Beef is the protein base and helps make the casserole filling.
- Cream of Mushroom Soup binds everything together and adds moisture and creaminess.
- Worcestershire sauce adds a savory depth and subtle tang that enhances the richness of the beef, cheese, and creamy soup.
- Cheddar Cheese adds a gooey, melty texture, and its flavor enhances the other ingredients.
- Garlic Salt adds savory flavor and seasoning to the dish.
Helpful Tips
- Brown the beef well: Let the ground beef get a little color while cooking instead of just turning it gray. That extra browning adds a lot more flavor to the whole dish.
- Drain the grease thoroughly: After cooking the beef, make sure to drain off the excess grease. This keeps the casserole from turning out too heavy or oily.
- Use frozen tater tots straight from the bag: No need to thaw them first. Putting them in frozen helps them crisp up better in the oven.
- Arrange Tater Tots Evenly: Place the tater tots evenly over the casserole so they crisp up for the best flavor.
- Spread the soup mixture evenly: Make sure the creamy layer covers the tots well so every bite stays moist and flavorful. Uneven spots can turn out a little dry.
- Let it rest before serving: Give it about 5–10 minutes after baking to settle. This makes it easier to scoop and helps everything hold together nicely.

Substitutions and Variations
Ground Turkey or Chicken: Swap out the ground beef for a lighter version with ground turkey or chicken.
Homemade White Sauce: Make your own sauce with milk, flour, butter, and seasonings for a fresher taste.
Different Cheeses: Try pepper jack for a bit of spice, mozzarella for a gooey finish, or a Mexican cheese blend for added flair.
Spices: Add taco seasoning or smoked paprika for a flavor upgrade.
French-Fried Onions or Crushed Chips: Top with French-fried onions, potato chips, or tortilla chips for added crunch.
Green Beans or Corn: Stir in green beans or corn for extra veggies, or add a frozen mixed vegetable blend for color and texture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this casserole ahead of time? Yes. You can prepare the casserole and assemble it ahead of time. Just cover it and store it in the refrigerator. Bake it when you’re ready to serve, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time if it’s cold from the fridge.
How can I prevent the tater tots from getting soggy? To ensure crispy tater tots, avoid overcooking the casserole. Bake it until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
How do I know when it’s done baking? The top should be golden and crispy, and the edges will be bubbling. If the center is hot all the way through, it’s ready to come out.
Do I need to cover it while baking? No, it’s best baked uncovered so the tater tots can get nice and crispy. Covering it would soften the top instead.
Can I use a different pan if I don’t have a 9×13? Yes, just use something close in size and adjust the layers as needed. A slightly smaller dish will make it thicker and may need a little more time.
Why does my casserole seem a little watery? This usually happens if the beef wasn’t drained well or the layers weren’t spread evenly. Making sure everything is evenly distributed helps it bake up just right.

Storage Tips
- Cool Before Storing: Let the casserole cool to room temperature before covering and storing. This helps avoid condensation that can make it soggy.
- Use Airtight Containers: Store leftovers in airtight containers to keep them fresh. If you’re using the casserole dish, cover it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
- Fridge Storage: Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave or reheat the entire dish in the oven at 350°F until warmed through for the best texture.
- Freezing Option: Tater Tot Casserole freezes well. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and foil, then freeze for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating for best results.

What to Serve with Tater Tot Casserole
- A simple green salad is always a good choice to balance out the richness. Something crisp with a light dressing helps cut through the creamy, cheesy layers.
- Steamed or roasted vegetables work really well on the side. Green beans, broccoli, or carrots add a little freshness and color to the plate.
- Dinner rolls or a slice of buttered bread are great for soaking up any of that creamy sauce. It turns the whole meal into something extra comforting.
- If you want something a little tangy, a scoop of coleslaw or a pickle on the side adds a nice contrast. That little bit of crunch and acidity pairs really well with the casserole.
- And if you’re feeding a bigger crowd, a simple fruit salad is an easy way to round everything out. It adds something light and slightly sweet to finish the meal.

I’m planning on creating the hamburger/tater tot casserole. I wondered if I can substitute the cream of mushroom soup for another flavor. Mushroom does not go over well in my home.
Many thanks!
Hi Robin,
Cream of chicken or cream of celery will work best in this recipe. Let me know how you like it!
Best,
Heidi (aka Lulu)
