Amish Country Casserole comes from Amish-style cooking, where meals are practical, hearty, and meant to feed a family. Recipes like this stuck around because they stretch ingredients, use pantry staples, and just work. It’s old-fashioned, cozy, and the kind of dish your family will ask for again.

Ingredients You Will Need

A flat lay of ingredients in bowls and on a white surface: ground beef, shredded cheddar cheese, peas, cream of mushroom soup, chopped onions, seasonings, milk, and uncooked egg noodles.
  • Ground beef is the main protein and makes this casserole filling.
  • Onion adds flavor as it cooks.
  • Milk keeps everything creamy and helps the casserole bake up nice and soft instead of dry.
  • Cream of mushroom soup ties everything together and gives it that classic, comforting casserole taste.
  • Garlic salt adds just the right amount of seasoning without having to measure a bunch of spices.
  • Onion powder gives an extra boost of onion flavor even after the fresh onion cooks down.
  • Pepper adds a mild kick and keeps the dish from tasting bland.
  • Egg noodles soak up all that creamy sauce and turn tender as the casserole bakes.
  • Frozen peas add a little color and a light bite that balances out the richness.
  • Shredded cheddar cheese melts on top and finishes everything off with a cheesy layer that makes it hard to resist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the noodles really cook in the oven? They do. The noodles soften as they bake and soak up the creamy sauce, so there’s no need to boil them first.

How do I keep it from drying out? Make sure it’s tightly covered with foil while it bakes so the noodles stay moist and tender.

How do I know when it’s done? The noodles should be tender, the sauce creamy, and the top melted and bubbly.

Can I make it creamier? You can add a splash more milk or stir in a little sour cream if you want it extra creamy.

Does this need to rest before serving? Letting it sit for a few minutes helps it set up, but it’s not a must.

Helpful Tips

Stir everything really well before baking, so the noodles are fully coated and cook evenly.

Check the noodles before adding cheese and give them a quick stir if needed to make sure everything is cooking evenly.

Use a deep baking dish to avoid spills if the sauce bubbles up while baking.

Use freshly shredded cheese if you can, since it melts more smoothly than pre-shredded.

Bake it on the middle rack for the most even cooking.
