Heavy Cream: Heavy cream adds richness and creaminess to the eggs, creating a velvety texture. It also contributes to the moisture content, preventing the eggs from becoming dry during the baking process.

Eggs: Eggs provide the main substance. They bring a protein-rich, savory taste to the shirred eggs and serve as the base for the entire dish.

Salt: Salt enhances the natural flavors of the eggs and heavy cream. It helps balance the sweetness of the heavy cream and enhances the savory elements in the dish. Additionally, salt brings out the richness of the eggs.

Pepper: Pepper adds a subtle heat flavor to the shirred eggs. Its presence complements the creaminess of the heavy cream and eggs. The pepper’s spiciness helps cut through the richness of the eggs as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prevent the eggs from overcooking? Keep a close eye on the baking time. Start checking for doneness a few minutes before the recommended time, as ovens may vary. The eggs should be set but still slightly jiggly for a creamy texture.

What should I serve with shirred eggs? Shirred eggs pair well with toast, bacon, or sausage for a complete breakfast.

Can I make shirred eggs ahead of time? While shirred eggs are best enjoyed fresh, you can prepare them partially ahead. Crack the eggs into the dish, cover, and refrigerate. Add cream, salt, and pepper just before baking.

How do I know when the shirred eggs are done? The eggs should have opaque whites and a slightly runny yolk for a creamy texture. Bake until the whites are set but the yolks remain soft.

What’s the ideal baking dish for shirred eggs? Use oven-safe ramekins or small baking dishes for individual servings. A shallow, wide dish allows for even cooking.

Herbs: Incorporate fresh herbs like chives, parsley, or thyme for added flavor.

Cheese: Sprinkle grated cheddar or parmesan cheese over the top of each egg before baking.

Bacon Rings: Cook bacon slightly and take it out of the pan before it’s crisp. Line each cup with bacon before adding and baking the egg.

Ham Cups: Place a slice of boiled ham inside each cup before breaking and adding and baking the egg.

Potato Cups: Place seasoned mashed potatoes in the bottom of each cup before adding and baking the egg.

Final Thoughts

Before making this recipe, I had never had baked eggs which seems strange to me. It was so easy and took less attention than making fried or scrambled eggs. My kids liked them too, which means I’ll be making them more often.

Ingredients

  • 4 Tablespoons Heavy Cream
  • 4 Eggs
  • 4 Pinches Salt
  • 4 Pinches Pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325℉.
  • Spray 4 ramekins with cooking spray.
  • Pour 1 Tablespoon of heavy cream into each ramekin.
  • Crack an egg into each ramekin.
  • Season each egg with salt and pepper.
  • Place ramekins on a baking sheet and bake at 325℉ for 8-10 minutes or until egg whites are firm.

Notes

  • Do not increase the heat to speed up the cooking time. Shirred eggs are made with a gentle, slow oven heat.
  • After 8 minutes, check every 2 minutes until the white is set and the yolk is soft. Oven temperatures vary. Mine took about 14 minutes to cook just right.
  • Be careful not to overcook or the whites will become hard and rubbery.
  • The baking dishes will retain heat and continue cooking the eggs after they are removed from the oven.
