As summer comes to an end, I don’t know about you, but I’m still craving cool treats. This Chocolate Milkshake Recipe is perfect for those warm, late summer and early autumn evenings.

Milkshakes are fun because there are so many different ways to make them and vary the flavors. The recipe below is just the way I prefer to make mine. Enjoy!

What Ingredients Will I Need?

  • Milk – Acts as the liquid base that helps everything blend smoothly. It thins out the ice cream and ice to create a drinkable consistency.
  • Chocolate Syrup – Boosts the chocolate flavor and adds sweetness. It helps tie everything together with a rich, chocolaty taste.
  • Chocolate Ice Cream – The creamy base of the milkshake. It brings most of the flavor, texture, and sweetness.
  • Ice – Adds thickness and makes the milkshake colder and more refreshing without relying on extra ice cream.
  • Whipped Cream (optional) – Adds a light, creamy topping for presentation and an extra bit of indulgence.
  • Chocolate Sprinkles (optional) – Adds a fun, crunchy texture and a little extra chocolate flair on top.

Helpful Tips for Making the Chocolate Milkshake Recipe

  • Use crushed ice or crush the ice before putting it in the blender to make it easier to blend.
  • The harder the ice cream is, the better. If it’s too soft, you will have chocolate milk instead of a chocolate shake.
  • For a richer flavor, add more chocolate syrup.
  • For a thicker shake, add more ice or ice cream.
  • For a thinner shake, add less ice or more milk.
  • Blend in bursts – Start on a low speed and increase gradually to avoid over-blending (which can make the shake too runny).
  • Chill your glass – Pop your serving glass in the freezer for a few minutes first—it helps keep the shake cold longer.
  • Serve immediately – Milkshakes are best enjoyed fresh while they’re still thick and creamy.

Variations

  • Mint Chocolate: add 3 drops of peppermint extract.
  • Banana: use 1 ripe medium-sized banana instead of chocolate syrup and vanilla ice cream instead of chocolate.
  • Strawberry: use 2 cups fresh strawberries in place of chocolate syrup and vanilla or strawberry ice cream in place of chocolate.
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate: Add a tablespoon or two of peanut butter.

What to Serve with a Chocolate Milkshake

Cookies – Classic chocolate chip, peanut butter, or Oreos are perfect for dunking.

Brownies – Fudgy brownies and a cold milkshake? Yes, please.

Fries – Crispy, salty fries and a chocolate milkshake are a classic pairing. Dip your fries in the shake, trust me!

Burgers – That salty-sweet combo hits every time.

Fruit skewers – Strawberries, bananas, or berries for a refreshing contrast.

Final Thoughts on the Chocolate Milkshake Recipe

This recipe was quick and easy to make so I will definitely be making it again. Next time, I might make a different flavor, though. My family really enjoyed it and my kids were asking to have shakes the next night as well! I’m probably going to limit them to one shake per week, lol.
