Peanut butter bread has been around since the 1930s and 1940s, when home cooks found creative ways to bake with simple pantry staples. Peanut butter added flavor and richness to quick breads without needing a lot of extra ingredients. This particular recipe comes straight from my grandma’s 1940s recipe book, which makes it feel extra special every time I bake it.

I love recipes like this because they’re simple, reliable, and full of that old-fashioned homemade charm. With just a few basic ingredients, it turns into a soft, slightly nutty loaf that’s perfect with butter or a little jam. Every time I make it, it makes me think about the kinds of cozy treats that probably came out of my grandma’s kitchen decades ago.
Quick Facts

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Simple Pantry Ingredients
You only need a handful of everyday ingredients to make this bread, and chances are you already have most of them in your kitchen.
No Yeast or Eggs Required
Because it’s a quick bread, there’s no waiting for dough to rise and no eggs needed. Peanut butter helps give the loaf its rich flavor and soft texture.
Easy to Make
This is the kind of recipe that comes together quickly with simple steps, making it perfect for beginner bakers or busy days.
Warm, Cozy Flavor
The peanut butter gives every slice a mild nutty flavor that feels comforting and familiar.
Perfect Anytime Treat
It’s great for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or even a simple dessert with a little butter, honey, or jam.
Ingredients You Will Need
- Flour forms the structure of the bread. It provides the framework that holds everything together and gives the loaf its shape and crumb.
- Baking Powder is the leavening agent that helps the bread rise. It creates air bubbles during baking so the loaf becomes light and tender instead of dense.
- Salt balances the sweetness and enhances the flavor of the peanut butter. It also helps bring all the other flavors together.
- Sugar adds a gentle sweetness and helps keep the bread tender and moist. It also contributes to the golden color of the crust.
- Milk adds moisture and helps bring the batter together. It also contributes to the soft texture of the finished bread.
- Peanut butter is the adds flavor, richness, and fat, which helps keep the bread soft and moist.

Helpful Tips
- Measure the Flour Carefully: Too much flour can make the bread dense. Spoon the flour into your measuring cup and level it off with a knife instead of scooping directly from the bag.
- Don’t Overmix the Batter: Once you add the milk, stir just until everything comes together. Overmixing can make quick breads tougher instead of tender.
- Grease the Pan Well: Peanut butter breads can stick a little, so make sure your loaf pan is well greased. You can also line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
- Check for Doneness Early: Ovens vary, so start checking around the 30-minute mark. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean or with just a few crumbs.
- Let the Bread Cool Before Slicing: It’s tempting to cut into it right away, but letting the loaf cool helps it set up and slice more neatly.
Substitutes and Variations
Nut Butter: While peanut butter is traditional, you can experiment with other nut or seed butters like almond butter, cashew butter, or sunflower seed butter.
Add-Ins: Customize your peanut butter bread by adding chocolate chips, chopped nuts, dried fruit, or even shredded coconut for added flavor and texture.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Bread: Add cocoa powder or chocolate chips to the batter for a chocolate twist on classic peanut butter bread.
Banana Peanut Butter Bread: Combine mashed ripe bananas with peanut butter for a delicious and moist banana-peanut butter bread.
Glazed Peanut Butter Bread: Drizzle a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and water on top of the bread for extra sweetness.
Crunchy Topping: Sprinkle chopped peanuts, oats, or a streusel topping on your bread before baking for added crunch.
Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Bread: Combine peanut butter with chocolate chips for a delectable combination of sweet and nutty flavors.

Keep It Moist: To help prevent the bread from drying out, you can place a piece of parchment paper or a paper towel inside the container to absorb excess moisture.
Refrigerating the Bread: If you want it to last a little longer, you can store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Just keep it wrapped well so it doesn’t dry out.
Freezing for Later: Peanut butter bread freezes very well. Wrap the whole loaf or individual slices tightly in plastic wrap and then place them in a freezer bag.
How Long It Freezes: The bread will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months without losing much quality.
Thawing: Let the bread thaw at room temperature, or pop a slice straight into the toaster for a quick snack.

- Sliced Bananas: Bananas and peanut butter are a classic combination. Add a few slices on top of a toasted piece of bread for an easy snack or breakfast.
- A Drizzle of Honey or Maple Syrup: If you like things a little sweeter, a light drizzle of honey or maple syrup on a warm slice makes it feel like a treat.
- Fresh Fruit on the Side: Serve it with fresh strawberries, apple slices, or grapes for a simple breakfast or snack plate.
- Coffee or Milk: Peanut butter bread is perfect with a hot cup of coffee in the morning or a cold glass of milk in the afternoon.
- Yogurt and Berries: Pair a slice with a bowl of yogurt and fresh berries to turn it into a simple, balanced breakfast.

My peanut butter bread flavor was great but came out crumbly.. not dry at all… very moist, but could barely pick it up it!!! fell apart in my hand… had to put it on a plate and use a fork… could I put an egg in it for binding?
I’m sorry that happened! I haven’t tried adding an egg, but it should work to help bind it. Let me know if you try it and it works.
I wish more people would actually make the recipe before they post a comment. Sounding good and pretty pictures doesn’t alsways equate to tasting great.
That said, I too want to try this but have a question; what size loaf pan did you use? There’s about a 15% difference in capacity between the two standard sizes (9×5 and 8×4) which could affect bakng time and outcome. Thanks.
Hi Madison,
I totally understand. I used a 9×5 loaf pan, which was the standard in the 1940s. I hope that helps and let me know how it turns out. 🙂
I wish more people would try the recipe before commenting—looks don’t always equal taste. I’m excited to try this! What size loaf pan did you use? Thanks!
I agree. It is very good, but not super sweet. I used 8.5″ x 4.5.” I hope you enjoy it. 🙂
