The Super Bowl is fast approaching and if you’re like me, you will need some savory snacks to munch on. Even though we won’t be having a party this year, our little family of five will still have a huge spread of appetizers and salty treats to eat, including Snack Mix. What is football without food?

Snack Mix Ingredients.

I usually make this snack mix for Christmas to balance out all of the sweet goodies I bake, mostly because my mom and grandma always made it at that time of year. This recipe came from my great-grandma, so it is really special to me. Whenever I make it, I imagine my great-grandma cooking it in her tiny 1930s kitchen where my grandma grew up. It is similar to Chex Mix, but it has a few different ingredients that make it taste a little better in my opinion. I especially love the Cheerios. They taste amazing toasted!

Ingredients You Will Need

  • Pretzels
  • Cheerios
  • Rice Chex
  • Wheat Chex
  • Salted Peanuts
  • Butter
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Garlic Salt
  • Onion Salt
  • Celery Salt

Equipment You May Need

  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Microwave Safe Bowl
  • Cookie Sheet with sides

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store the snack mix? Once it’s cooled completely, store it in an airtight container to maintain freshness. It can last for a couple of weeks if stored properly.

How do I keep the mix from getting soggy? To prevent sogginess, ensure your mix is fully cooled before storing it in an airtight container. The low and slow baking process helps remove excess moisture from the mix.

Can I make this snack mix in advance for a party? Yes, you can make it in advance. In fact, it’s often better when the flavors have had time to meld. Just store it properly in an airtight container until you’re ready to serve.

What’s the best way to mix everything without breaking the cereal pieces? Gently toss or stir the mix to evenly coat it with the seasoning. You can also use a large, clean paper bag or a plastic container with a lid for gentle shaking. This should help prevent breaking the cereal pieces.

Substitutions and Variations

Spicy: If you enjoy a kick of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce to the seasoning mixture.

Different Nuts: Instead of peanuts, try using cashews, almonds, pecans, or a mix of your favorite nuts for a different flavor and texture.

Nut-Free: If you or someone you’re serving is allergic to peanuts or nuts, simply omit the peanuts or replace them with roasted seeds like sunflower or pumpkin seeds.

Seeds: Incorporate roasted or spiced seeds like sesame seeds or paprika-coated pumpkin seeds for added crunch and flavor.
