7-Layer Bars are such a classic treat. They are just as good for potlucks in the summer as they are for Christmas treats in the winter. I make mine with three kinds of chips: chocolate, white chocolate, and butterscotch. I have made these every Christmas for 20 years and they’re my husband’s favorite.

7-Layer Bars came about in the 1960s, when Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk featured a recipe called Magic Cookie Bars in its advertising and recipe books. Over the years, they have also been called other names like Hello Dolly Bars and Magic Cookie Bars. No matter what you call them, they are delicious.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Swap the Nuts: Not a fan of walnuts? Try pecans, almonds, or macadamia nuts instead. Each adds its own flavor and texture to the bars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are they called 7-Layer Bars? Traditional 7-Layer Bars are made by layering seven ingredients in a baking dish before baking. Depending on the recipe, the exact layers may vary slightly, but the name has stuck for generations.

Can I make these ahead of time? Absolutely. In fact, many people think they taste even better the next day after the flavors have had time to meld together.

Storage Tips

Store at room temperature for up to 5 days. Keep the bars in an airtight container to prevent them from drying out.

Place parchment paper between layers. If you’re stacking the bars, a sheet of parchment or wax paper between layers will help prevent sticking.

Keep them in a cool spot. Since the bars contain chocolate and sweetened condensed milk, they can become soft if stored in a warm kitchen.

Ingredients

  • ½ Cup Butter unsalted
  • Cups Graham Cracker Crumbs
  • 1 Cup Chocolate Chips semisweet
  • ½ Cup Butterscotch Chips
  • ½ Cup White Chocolate Chips
  • 1 Cup Walnuts chopped
  • 1 Can Sweetened Condensed Milk 14 ounces
  • 1⅓ Cup Coconut shredded

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350℉.
  • Add butter to a 9×13 baking dish and leave in the oven until melted. Swirl to coat the bottom and the sides of the pan with butter.
  • Spread the graham cracker crumbs evenly over the bottom of the pan.
  • Layer semisweet chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, white chocoalte chips, and walnuts evenly over the crumbs.
  • Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the walnuts.
  • Sprinkle with coconut.
  • Bake at 350℉ for 25 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
  • Let the bars cool completely before cutting.
